Summer School FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the dates and hours for summer school?

Thursday, June 20th through Friday, July 12th.  There will be no school on July 4th and 5th in observance of Independence Day. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 3 PM. 

How do I register for summer school?

Summer school registration is an online application; there is no paper application. Registration will open on April 15th. Registration is first come, first serve.

Is there a cost to attend summer school?

There is no cost/program fee for summer school.

 What age are students eligible to attend summer school?

Students entering 9th grade and those still seeking their high school diploma in the fall are eligible to attend summer school. 

How many days of summer school can a student miss?

Students missing more than 2 days will earn a failing grade. This includes both excused and unexcused absences. 

Will lunch be available at school?

The New Market Deli will be closed for the first two days (June 20 & 21) and the last 2 days (July 11 & 12) of the session.  Students should bring money (cash or card) to eat at the deli, or lunch and snacks, on a daily basis.  There is no free or reduced lunch program available during summer school. 

What do I do if my student is on a waitlist?

Students who were placed in their second choice program, please go to that program on the first day.  If there is space, we will move you once we determine who is present.  Students who are not scheduled for a program, just on a waitlist, will need to come to the main office on the first day of school at 8 AM and check-in.  We will take attendance within the first 1/2 hour of class and start placing waitlisted kids into programs as space allows.   

Is there transportation available?

School buses are not available for summer school.  Transportation is the responsibility of the individual. 

Are students allowed to leave during the day without permission?

No, New Market is a closed campus.  Students may not leave during the day without their parent/guardian's permission.

What do I do if my student has a health concern?

If your student is carrying medication and/or has a health safety plan, please contact New Market Skills Center's office for the required paperwork.  The student's enrollment will not be complete until all forms have been turned in. 

Are there any special prerequisites for the classes?

Culinary Arts students must bring their current Food Handler's Card on the first day of class; this permit must be valid throughout summer school. Other than the Food Handler Card for Culinary students, the summer classes do not require pre-requisite classes or tests.

What about New Market School of Cosmetology students?

New Market School of Cosmetology students will be enrolled in summer automatically.  The summer session will begin June 17th and go through August 27th.  Summer hours are 8 am to 3 pm.  Students can take vacation days, but keep in mind the hours needed to test for your cosmetology license.  

When will summer school grades be available?

Grades will be mailed home within two weeks after the session ends.

Do the summer school grades appear on the high school transcript?

Yes, according to WAC 392-415-070 any high school classes attempted must be recorded on a student’s transcript. The transcript indicates that students receive 0.5 elective or CTE credit for each summer school session. Cosmetology students earn 2.0 elective or CTE credit for the entire summer session. Credits will be sent to the student’s home high school registrar in September.
